Diets Stink

Why are diets so hard? Since my commitment to cut out sugar and white flour (see post on 9/15), I have fallen off the wagon so many times, I've lost count. It's been only 8 days! Just to give you an example, I failed yesterday after visiting the Miette Confiserie (fancy bakery in SF) due to their chocolate bundt cake (I was bringing the deesert for my book club last night). Which really was worth the calories. And today, I failed because of the leftover pizza in the work kitchen area. Damn those lunch meetings and left overs. I not only ate the leftover pizza, which is forbidden on my diet but I ate 3 slices. That's like 15 Weight Watchers points (at least!) and would have to run at least 12 miles to burn those off. And I'm not even running today! I should have ate my lunch on time then I would have eaten the chicken salad that I brought from home. Then, I may not have been tempted. Ok, I can start over again. I promise to eat the salad for dinner...

  1. stupid diets :( i think "diets" are hard... but once you get certain changes worked into daily lifestyle changes it isn't so hard because they turn into habits. good luck - you can do it!!

  2. it's the lifestyle change that is so hard. i mean, how do i say no to pizza? and to free pizza? and well, chocolate is something i'll always have hard time giving up... but it's so hard to rewire the brain!! ok, i'm gonna try. because i really want to lose 5 lbs before the rock n roll half marathon!

  4. I always tell my clients that even if you "blow it" you still have to eat the healthy stuff. Avoiding healthy choices in order to save calories is a big mistake.

Yeah, 5 pounds in 11 days is a LOT of weight for someone who's so close to her ideal weight. To get close, though, try to get most of your carbs from green sources (veggies!) and avoid refined carbs as much as possible. Ixnay on the ine-way. (NO WINE!) And chocolate must be earned.

The fact that you're so close to ideal makes dieting tougher, in my opinion. And who am I to talk? Last night I had an apple fritter at Starbucks JUST BECAUSE I WANTED ONE! (It's so great being a grown up sometimes!)

  5. Do not do diets!!, it is impossible to keep up with them, I do not think anyone can live eating what those crazy diets tell us to eat!!

    Exercise instead!!!, keep on running!!

  6. leslie, you are hilarious! i will "start over" tonight and keep going! and, just for clarification, i am no where near my ideal weight! i would have to lose 20 lbs to be "near"!

  7. ahh it's hard. and it's pizza! so tempting! just start fresh from here on out. i find that sometimes when i give in and eat something "bad," then i want to keep eating bad, which is silly. so say, if i have a bag of chips in a weak moment from the vending machine at work, that doesn't mean it's cool to go home and eat like shit the rest of the night!
    good luck!

  8. brooke, i am the same way! i was just thinking: great, i ate pizza. there goes my diet. i might as eat a pint of ice cream because i am feeling bad about myself. might as keep on the self destructive behavior!

    but...

i'm going to pull myself out this this diet funk!

  9. I am not a fan of diets. I think that we all should be able to eat what we want. The key is to not overdue it. For example, I know I can easily eat a whole pan of brownies (I have before over a course of a day!!). But I really limit myself. I'll eat 1 and if I am still craving another, I will have a glass of chocolate soy milk. I can't say no to sweets, but I think I balance things off by bringing my lunch to work (great for portion control) and I cook pretty much everynight which allows for me to control what is put in my food. (I like to cook so that helps too)

You can still have pizza, but have a slice and add a salad or some raw veggies as a side. I really believe you have to find a balance and can't completely eliminate the foods you like.

Today at work I had 2 cookies, one oatmeal raisin and once choc chip.

  10. d10, i think that's my problem... i have such a hard time finding a good balance!! (and portion control, too...)

  11. Have you tried having little snacks at like 9 or 10 in the morning then again at 3ish. that helps me to avoid over-eating and not chow down on the sweets.

  12. Totally agree!! I can't limit or take out one whole thing, otherwise I want it! It is so hard to monitor and I fall off the wagon too. I like it though when I'm still on it and watching the weight go down. It is hard to gain weight! I'll save these posts for you re:prego runner - it is so hard. Blogging keeps me sane and gives me a voice. Keep going, you are doing just fine and know what you need to do!!! Enjoy life!

  13. As long as I don't cut out rice, I'm good. I tried it once and went into withdrawals.

  14. I know exactly how you feel. I can't seem to cut enough. Pizza is my bane though. I could eat it everyday. Here's to your success.

  15. Oy, I can't even comment because what goes into my mouth is nothing but trash. In fact I would not be surprised if I've already gained back the 4 I was down 2 weeks ago (I'm too scared to jump on the scale HAHA)

  16. Aww, dieting does stink. I just try to keep tons of healthy snacks (apples, yogurt, pb, larabars) at work and when there's pizza, I usually tell myself, "That's not even good pizza. This weekend after your run why don't you treat yourself to some pizza you really like." (Hard if your office orders gourmet pizza, easy if they order Dominos.) But I agree that a really nice piece of cake is worth the calories!

  17. Why is it that when I read your blog I generally get hungry? Diets are hard, and I just found out yesterday that a five guys burger and fries has 1530 calories and I'd have to run 11 miles to burn it off... but they taste so damn good!

    ReplyDelete
  18. oh i love five guys' burgers!! it's seriously a good thing that we don't have one in california... i do miss them, though!!

  19. Eat and be merry!

I get really grumpy if I deprive myself of food. So it is either be a skinny b*tch and snap at everybody...or be a bit chubby and feel content...with the state of my full tummy...not my body.

    Ah, diets do suck!
